"Have a Good Day"

Today I was walking on campus and I got "stuck" behind this elderly gentleman who was walking really slowly. He was carrying a stack of newspapers and a sack from the bookstore. Who knows what he was doing. I was kind of annoyed, but I wasn't in a hurry so I slowed down and walked behind him for a while. As I passed him he said "Have a good day." It brought a smile to my face. Then as I continued to walk back to my hall I ran into someone I live with. They didn't even say hi. I got half a smile and kind of a wave. The man behind me said something to every single person he passed. To some he just said 'hi,' to others it was 'have a good day' and to one girl it was 'I really like your hat.' As I got to the corner where I turn, I stopped and just watch him amble along. Not many people said anything in return. I was really struck with how not courtious my generation is.

Here is a gentleman who understands something grand about life....the need and desire for human connection. I think that as we move into the technological world, we often forget how much we need people and love. God made man in his image, there fore when we build relationships with humans, we are communing with God's creation. We are able to feel His embrace through the arms of a friend or aquaintance. We are able to hear his words through the voice of a person. We are able to see an image of God by looking into the eyes of our mortal brothers and sisters.

As college students, techonolgy is our life. We use it to communicate quickly and effectively, but thats all there is. Our communication gets the job done, but it doesn't go beyond words. Even now I would rather be discussing this topic than typing about it on a blog, but seeing how anyone that I would discuss this with is either in class, far away, or I haven't met them yet, a blog will have to suffice. It really upsets me when I walk on campus and can't make eye contact with anyone. People put in their i-pods or mp3 players and forget about the real world. We are escaping responsiblity to each other through technology and media. I like to know that people know me or what to talk to me. I love it even more when I receive a hug or a kiss from a friend who knows me.

In a world that is full of beauty ads, and campaigns to be the best you can be in this fast paced life, I think it is most important to slow down and say "hello." That is my challenge for myself and for all of you, just say hello and wish the people that you encounter a good day. Make eye contact and just smile. Not only will you feel better, you could totally make the day of someone else!

I've only scratched the surface on this topic. I could discuss it for hours.

Verse of the day : 1 Corinthians 10:31 "Whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do it for the glory of God."

I'm not sure that there is anything that any one can do. E-mail me your phone number and we can talk it over!
